AUTHOR

David Alderton

• is a widely respected expert when it comes to the care and breeding of aquarium and pond fish, and he shares his knowledge in this field widely, both as a writer and a broadcaster. Based in the UK, he has worked with various organizations in this field, including the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) headquartered in Washington, DC. His interest in fish and their care began in childhood with a pet goldfish, and he has retained a lifelong fascination with members of this group and koi, even traveling to parts of China and Japan to view them there. David’s broad experience also extends to tropical fish—he has kept and bred many species—and in the area of aquatic plants, he is particularly fascinated by water lilies.

Max Gibbs

• the principal photographer for this book, first kept fish at the age of 11. The pastime became a business when he started a retail aquarium in the mid-1950s, which grew to become The Goldfish Bowl of Oxford. He took up photography in 1990 and has built one of the world’s largest collections of high-quality marine and freshwater fish photographs, the Photomax Picture Library

Marshall Meyers

• is the Senior Advisor and former CEO of PIJAC in Washington, DC. He has very extensive knowledge of the aquatic industry, both personally and through his board members, who represent a number of the most significant companies operating in the supply of fish of all types, as well as of fishkeeping equipment.

Timothy Hovanec, PhD,

• is the president of DrTim’s Aquatics, a company that provides natural products for aquariums and ponds. He was the Chief Science Officer for Marineland Laboratories, Moorpark, California. A keen fishkeeper himself, his expertise also extends to the fields of public aquariums and aquaculture, and he is the author of numerous scientific and popular articles on microbial ecology and fishkeeping topics.

Bob Weintraub

• was actively involved in fishkeeping for more than 55 years, initially as a hobbyist breeding rare species. He was a founding partner of Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, an international manufacturer of fish medicines and aquarium and pond treatments. Toward the end of his career, he was engaged both in the field of pond and aquarium design, and as a koi consultant in the US and Japan
